  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from operaforbeginnersdotblog -- Is that all there is? : This classic existentialist story is about a rather unexcitable, blase man who gets innocently tangled up in some messy affairs of his acquainrances and ends up killing a man. While in prison and on trial he contemplates life's absurdities and its ultimate meaningless nature. These observations of course have been made by Peggy Lee, Queen ("nothing really matters") and many philosophers throughout the ages. The notion that everything is meaningless is both depressing and liberating. As Eckhart Tolle said when asked the meaning of life: "Life has no meaning. We bring meaning to it." Find your grail. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sierra D. Collins -- Hmmm I dunno Camus : Interesting read, but it leaves me wondering why one can't both accept the absurdity of life and also find passion, joy, and love. Why can't we still find value in the time we are given? It's true that life is short, but can't this serve to infuse life with meaning rather than bleakness. couldn't it rather intensify love rather than dismiss it as unnecessary? Can't we find humor in the absurdity of life and allow for the possibility of a type of God that transcends our traditional understandings of an all-powerful deity, and a fine-tuned universe. My issue with the conclusions of this story are that Camus seems to oversimplify things. The very idea of absurdity precludes some type.of meaning, because death and pain wouldn't seem so strange and alien (again, absurd) if there weren't something we feel like we're losing when we die. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from B. Felsher -- My favorite book : I have read this so many times, both in French and in English. The story of a man who understands that jealousy and love are incompatible, that jealousy is incompatible with wanting the best for your fellow. This isolates him as he feels that no one, not even his own mother wishes but the worst for him. As a survival instinct, he learns to feed off of this hatred and apathy and in his isolation (stranger is better translated as foreigner from French), only when surrounded by it does he finally feel at one with his fellow man. Only then, does he finally feel love and joy. Only then does he no longer feel as an outsider, but as just another accepted member of society. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Andito Toquito -- The Birth of Absurdism? : I read this one since it was cited as one of the texts that led to the absurdist school of thought. In a nutshell, more modern writers have done a much more compelling job with the genre/philosophy--try Vonnegut or Percival Everett. If you're looking to see the origins, at least it's a short read. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sally Carrubba -- Really Didn’t Understand A Thing : People and schools refer to this book as some kind of classic. Frankly, I didn’t get the point or understand what made the guy tick. It was very cold and clinical. Maybe if I majored in Philosophy, I would have seen the genius. But, alas, I missed it. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from luap -- Very successful graphic version of an old classic : This is a clever graphic novel version of a classic of French literature. I have read the original, plus a couple translations. I read a review of this version and was curious (and rather skeptical!!), but I have to say that it captured much of the novel. I still prefer the "old fashioned" text, but I can see how this graphic version might be a gateway to Camus for other readers, especially young ones. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tim Johnson's ebat book club member -- An interesting book : I found this books approach fascinating the main character seems oddly disconnected from the other characters in the book with no real explanation as to why he most of the time seemed indifferent to regular emotions. He seemed passive to almost all things happening in the book mostly going along with them as well as having very simple dialogue but rather complex thoughts on the goings on in the book it seems he was perhaps meant to do this to act more as N empty vessel for the reader to embody, I dunno I don't think I would read it again but it's a short enough read it's worth giving a go ( Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C VAN DER MERWE -- Philosophy, anyone? : In my opinion, this is an excellent book to read for anyone interested in the concept of existentialism, although Camus denied being one himself. The novel is not long and easy to read. One's interest in the (unnamed) protagonist is maintained throughout. The book provides a graphic illustration of the futility of "the unexamined life " and challenges readers to consider their place in the grand scheme, i.e. the answer to "life, the universe, and everything". Definitely worth reading! ( Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Open mind -- Gripping to the end : I read this in a few hours and couldn't put it down . Lots has been said about this book. Camus denied it was on existentialism or any sort of philosophical theme . I have read modern interpretations that it is about a man with aspergers . I felt that it was about a poor soul who makes some bad decisions and ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. I felt it was a thriller but one with a twist at the end and I was left feeling that the people on trial were in fact the other characters. The only gripe I had was that I felt slightly racist undertones in some of the character descriptions of 'the moors' who were treated almost like unthinking and unfeeling beings with no purpose but I suppose the book is of its time. Nonetheless this is a brilliant and thought provoking read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Saskia -- Interesting philosophical ideas : It is a fairly short read, but even so I found myself bored in some of its passages, even when they had meaning and what should be interesting topics (grief, age, love etc) the entire thing was pretty ordinary with a lot of what seems like useless information like description of every person walking the planet and a painstakingly long description of his court proceedings (nothing interesting happens) which seemed incredibly unnecessary in the actual message of the book. Before the darker aspects, the relatable themes introduce nothing I haven't pondered before reading this book, they do however touch on his life as a slightly sociopathic person but it is exactly as you would expect. (Perhaps at the end we see some true, more darker conversation and atheism which I thoroughly enjoyed and would have given 5 stars if that was the entirety of the book) Even so, Camus is a good writer, and it isn't a book I will forget in the near future. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from EmilyB -- Interesting : The Stranger was much more philosophical than I expected: especially part two. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kt -- Depressingly beautiful : A depressingly beautiful short story of a man who thinks way too much and can't process emotion like 'normal' people, but what does it matter? I think everyone can relate to him in a way. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 24, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sandeep kaur -- A great philosophical book : I loved reading the percepctive of this MC's world and what he thinks of it. The times when he contemplates about life and thinks about what's important and what isn't can get very philosophical and makes you think about it as well. I also liked the characters and how they shaped the MC's life. The only thing that I think it needs is more pages to read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 9, 2021 )
